Learning intentions
- Separate features from functionality
- Describe one main feature and one key function of an information system
- Produce clear N4 Outcome 2.1 evidence
Success criteria
- I can describe what the system has or includes
- I can describe what the system does for the user
- I can avoid vague answers such as "it is easy to use"
The Difference That Matters
The verification-safe split
HASFeature
Something included in the system, such as linked tables, navigation links or bike images.DOESFunctionality
Something the system lets a user do, such as search, update, browse or view details. This is a known risk area in verification: pupils often mix up features and functionality. Keep the distinction simple.
| Word | Meaning | Bike Scotland example |
|---|---|---|
| Feature | Something the information system has or includes | The webpage has navigation links and bike images. The database has linked tables. |
| Functionality | Something the information system does for the user | The database lets the user search for bikes by type. The webpage lets users view bike details. |
A good answer describes one of each in simple terms. It does not just name them.
N4 Evidence Task
Practical Task 1 - Describe a feature and a function
Use your Bike Scotland database and companion webpage. Write one short paragraph for a basic feature and one short paragraph for a key function.
Sentence starters:
- One feature of my information system is...
- This is useful because...
- One function of my information system is...
- This allows the user to...
N4 evidence checklist
- Describes one basic feature of the information system (N4 O2.1)
- Describes one key function of the information system (N4 O2.1)
- Uses the pupil's own database/webpage, not a generic app
Weak answers to avoid
- "The website has pictures." This names a feature but does not describe it.
- "The database is good." This is too vague.
- "A feature is searching." Searching is usually functionality because it is something the system does.
Task Set
1. Which is a feature? TYPE 1
2. Which is functionality? TYPE 1
3. Write your N4 feature and functionality answer. TYPE 3 N4
One feature of my information system is that the webpage includes bike images next to text details such as model and price. This helps users recognise the type of bike. One function is that the database can search for bikes by type, which allows the shop to quickly find mountain, road or racing bikes.
